Key Facts
A Rainbow Lake in a Giant Bowl!
Quilotoa is a super cool lake that sits inside a giant, bowl-shaped hole called a caldera. This caldera is actually the top of a volcano that went to sleep a long, long time ago! The lake is about 3 kilometers wide, which is like walking across 30 football fields.
It's a beautiful green or blue color because of special minerals in the water. Sometimes, you can even see little puffs of steam, called fumaroles, coming from the bottom of the lake, like the volcano is still breathing softly!
When the Volcano Woke Up!
A very, very long time ago, about 800 years ago, the Quilotoa volcano had a HUGE eruption! It was so big that ash from it traveled all the way to the Pacific Ocean. After the big eruption, the top of the volcano collapsed, making the giant caldera we see today.
Inside this caldera, water started to collect, forming the amazing lake. It's like nature's way of healing a big wound, turning a powerful eruption into a beautiful, peaceful lake.
Hiking Around a Sleeping Giant!
People love to visit Quilotoa! You can hike all the way around the top of the caldera. It's about 10 kilometers, which is a long walk, maybe like walking to school and back a few times! The path can be sandy and steep, and sometimes there's fog that makes it feel mysterious. From the top, you can see the stunning lake below. It's a great adventure for brave hikers who want to see amazing views!
A Special Place for People
Quilotoa is a special place for the people who live nearby. They have small towns and hostels where visitors can stay. Some people even offer to let you ride mules to help you on your hike! The air is very thin up high in the mountains, so it can be a little hard to breathe, but the views are totally worth it. It’s a place where nature’s power and beauty come together.
