Quern-stone
Key Facts
Meet the Stone Grinder!
A quern-stone is like a super old-fashioned kitchen tool made of rock. It’s used to grind up hard things, especially grains like wheat, into soft flour. Think of it like a giant, heavy pestle and mortar, but made of two big stones! People used these to make the flour needed to bake bread, which was a very important food for them.
From Saddle Stones to Spinning Wheels!
The very first quern-stones were simple. One flat stone, called a saddle quern, stayed still. Then, a smaller, rounded stone called a muller was rubbed back and forth on top to grind the grains. Later, people invented a much cooler kind called a rotary quern. This one had a hole in the middle and a handle, so you could spin the top stone around and around, making grinding much faster!
Why These Stones Were Super Important!
Before fancy machines, quern-stones were a BIG deal. They let people turn tough grains into soft flour, which meant they could bake bread and make other yummy foods. This was super important for feeding families and communities. Without quern-stones, making food would have been much, much harder and taken way longer!
How to Make Flour with a Quern-stone!
Using a quern-stone was hard work! For the older kind, you’d put grains on the flat saddle stone and push the muller stone back and forth over them. For the rotary quern, you’d put grains in a hole at the top and then spin the top stone with a handle. This would grind the grains into flour, which would then fall out. It took a lot of energy and time to make enough flour for a meal!
