Punch and Judy

Imagine a puppet with a big nose and a funny voice! That's Mr. Punch. He's the star of a very old puppet show. In the show, Mr. Punch often gets into silly arguments and uses a floppy stick to bonk other puppets. It's like a cartoon come to life, but with puppets! The shows are usually short, with lots of quick, funny scenes. It’s a show that has made people laugh for hundreds of years.

Punch and Judy started a super long time ago, way back in 1662 in England. That's even older than your grandparents' grandparents! It was first shown in a special little house called a puppet booth. People would gather around to watch the funny puppet adventures. It became so popular that you could find these shows at the beach, making it a classic part of seaside fun for many families.

Punch and Judy is special because it's a very old tradition that still makes people giggle. It’s a way to see stories told with puppets that are full of slapstick comedy. Even though Mr. Punch can be a bit naughty, his silly actions and the audience shouting to warn him make it exciting. It’s a unique kind of entertainment that has been passed down through many generations.

One person, called a 'professor' or 'punchman', hides inside the puppet booth. They use their hands to make the puppets move and talk. The puppeteer controls Mr. Punch and all the other characters, making them wave their arms and bump into each other. Sometimes, a helper called a 'bottler' would stand outside to get the audience excited and collect money, like a ticket seller!
