Prosthesis
Key Facts
What's a Prosthesis?
A prosthesis is like a special helper for your body. If someone is missing a part of their body, like an arm or a leg, a prosthesis can be made to replace it. It's not a real body part, but it's designed to look and work like one.
Think of it as a super cool tool that helps people move, play, and do all sorts of everyday activities. It can be made of different materials, like plastic or metal, and sometimes it even has cool moving parts!
Long, Long Ago Helpers
People have been making helpers for missing body parts for a very, very long time! Way back in ancient Egypt, over 3,000 years ago, people made artificial toes out of wood and leather to help them walk. Later, during wars, many soldiers lost limbs, so clever people started making better artificial arms and legs.
These early ones were often simple, made of wood, and didn't move much. But they were still super important for helping people get around.
Superpowers for Everyday Life!
Prostheses are amazing because they give people the power to do things they might not be able to do otherwise. A prosthetic leg can help someone run, jump, and dance! A prosthetic arm can help someone hug, write, or even play a musical instrument.
These helpers let people live full and active lives, just like everyone else. They are designed to fit perfectly and feel comfortable, so people can wear them all day long.
How Do They Work?
Prostheses work by connecting to the body in a special way. For legs, a socket fits snugly around the remaining part of the leg, like a glove. This socket is attached to the prosthetic leg.
For arms, it might connect to the shoulder or the remaining part of the arm. Some prostheses are very simple and don't move, while others have amazing technology! They can have joints that bend like knees or elbows, and some even have sensors that can help them move with a thought!
