Proportion (architecture)

Imagine building with LEGOs. If you put a tiny brick on top of a giant one, it looks funny, right? Buildings are like that too!

Proportion in architecture is all about making sure the different parts of a building, like windows, doors, and walls, are the right size compared to each other. It helps buildings look strong, beautiful, and balanced, like a perfectly stacked tower of blocks that won't fall over. It’s like making sure your drawing of a house has a door that’s not as tall as the whole house!

Long, long ago, people building amazing structures like the pyramids in Egypt or grand temples in Greece thought a lot about proportion. They believed that using certain mathematical ideas, like special ratios, made buildings look extra special and pleasing to the eye. They studied nature, like the way flowers grow or how bodies are shaped, to find these perfect measurements.

It was like they had a secret recipe for making buildings look super cool and feel just right for people to be in.

Have you ever seen a building that looks wobbly or too tall and skinny? That's usually because the proportions are off! When buildings have good proportions, they feel safe and look nice.

Think about a school bus. It’s a good size for carrying lots of kids. If a building had windows that were too small, it would feel dark inside.

If the doors were too tiny, you couldn't even get in! Good proportions make buildings work better and look more beautiful.

Architects, the people who design buildings, use different tricks to get proportions right. Sometimes they use a special number called the 'golden ratio' which is found in nature and looks really pleasing. Other times, they just make sure that a tall building has wide parts to support it, or that a wide building has enough windows to let in light.

It’s all about making sure every piece fits together in a way that makes sense and looks great, just like fitting puzzle pieces together perfectly.
