Prehistoric Art: Pictures from the Past!

Long before you went to school, people lived in caves! They used natural colors like charcoal for black and ochre for red and yellow. They mixed these with spit or animal fat to make paint. Then, they used their hands, sticks, or even feathers to draw amazing pictures of animals like mammoths and bison, and sometimes even people! These paintings are like a secret diary from the Stone Age.

Besides paintings, ancient people also made small sculptures. These were often made from bone, stone, or clay. Some were of animals, but many were of people, especially women with curvy bodies. These little statues are called 'Venus figurines'. We think they might have been important for good luck or to celebrate families. They are small enough to fit in your hand!

Nobody knows for sure why these early artists created their work. Maybe they were telling stories about their hunts, or perhaps they believed the paintings would help them catch animals. Some scientists think the art was part of special ceremonies or rituals. It's like they were trying to understand the world around them and share their ideas.

Some of the most famous prehistoric art is found in caves like Lascaux in France and Altamira in Spain. These paintings are thousands of years old, even older than the pyramids! They show us that even without fancy paints or brushes, people have always loved to create and express themselves. It's a connection to our very distant ancestors.
