Australia: A Big Island Adventure!

Australia is a super big island, way down south! It has sunny beaches, dry deserts, and green forests. After World War II, a time when many countries were sad and broken, Australia decided it needed more people to help it grow and be safe. They wanted to fill up the land and make it stronger, like building with lots of new bricks!

New Friends Arrive!

After the war ended in 1945, Australia started inviting people from all over to come live there. The leader, Arthur Calwell, had a famous saying: 'Populate or perish!' This meant Australia needed more people to survive and get better. Many of these new people came from Europe, bringing their own special ways of living and talking.

Lots and Lots of New Faces!

Can you imagine a line of people as long as 182,159 school buses? That's how many people came to Australia from Europe after the war, looking for a new home! Most of them came from Britain and Ireland, but many others came from different countries too. They were all called 'New Australians' to make them feel welcome.

Making Australia Shine!

These new people helped Australia in many ways. They worked hard to build new things and made the country a more exciting place. They brought new foods, music, and traditions. This helped Australia become a country with lots of different cultures, like a big, colourful mosaic made of many tiny, beautiful pieces.
