They are smart Jewish leaders who figure out what to do when the old rules aren't clear enough for a new situation. They are like rule detectives, using ancient wisdom to solve modern puzzles!

The idea of having wise people to guide others about Jewish laws is super old! It started a long, long time ago, when Jewish people were learning and writing down their laws. Over many years, different wise scholars became known for their deep understanding. These scholars helped build up a big collection of decisions, like adding more and more books to a giant library of Jewish law.

Poseks are really important because they help Jewish people live according to their traditions, even when life changes. Think about it: the world is very different now than it was thousands of years ago! Poseks help us understand how ancient rules apply to new things like phones or cars. Their decisions, called 'psak', guide communities and individuals on how to act.

When a new question comes up, a Posek looks at all the old Jewish laws and teachings. They think really hard, like solving a giant jigsaw puzzle. They compare the new problem to similar situations from the past. Then, they make a decision, a 'psak', which is like the final answer to the puzzle. These answers are often written down so others can learn from them.
