Meet Pope Pius VI!

Imagine being the boss of a whole group of people for over 24 years! That's how long Pope Pius VI was in charge. He was born on Christmas Day in 1717, which is a pretty special birthday. His real name was Giovanni Angelo Braschi. He became the Pope, which is like the leader of the Catholic Church, in 1775. He also ruled over a place called the Papal States, which was like his own kingdom.

A Pope in Tough Times

When Pope Pius VI was the Pope, something huge and scary happened in France called the French Revolution. It was a time when people were very unhappy and changed their government. The new leaders in France didn't like the Catholic Church very much. They even shut down churches and told people they couldn't practice their religion freely. This made Pope Pius VI very sad and worried.

Napoleon's Big Surprise!

A famous general named Napoleon Bonaparte came to power in France. His soldiers marched into the Papal States and took over. They even captured Pope Pius VI! The Pope was taken away from his home and traveled a very long way to France. He was told to give up his power, but he refused. He stayed strong even when things were difficult.

A Long Reign and a Sad End

Pope Pius VI ruled for more than 24 years, which is one of the longest times any Pope has ever been in charge. He was the longest-ruling Pope of the Papal States. Sadly, he died in France in 1799, eighteen months after being captured. Even though his life ended sadly, he is remembered for his long time as Pope and for standing up for his beliefs.
