What Was This Big Idea?

The Poor People's Campaign was like a giant team-up in 1968. It was a plan to help people in America who didn't have enough money for food, homes, or other important things. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. helped start it. It was about making sure everyone had what they needed to live a good life, no matter what they looked like.

How Did They Ask for Help?

People from all over America, who were poor, traveled to Washington, D.C. They brought their stories and their needs. They set up a big camp on the National Mall, which is like a huge park in Washington. They stayed there for six weeks, showing everyone that they needed help. They wanted leaders to listen and make changes.

Why Was It So Important?

This campaign showed that people of all colors โ€“ Black, White, Asian, Hispanic, and Native American โ€“ could come together. They realized that being poor was something they all shared, and they could be stronger by working together. It was a way to say, 'We are here, and we need your help to make things fair!'

Who Was Behind This Big Plan?

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a very important leader who wanted to help poor people. After he was sadly gone, another leader named Ralph Abernathy continued the work. They believed that everyone deserved a fair chance. They asked for things like jobs for everyone and places for people to live.
