Key Facts
Meet the Frosty Poles!
Imagine the tippy-top and the very bottom of our planet Earth. These are the polar regions! They are super cold and covered in ice, like giant frozen playgrounds. In the north, there's the Arctic, with ice floating on the ocean. In the south, there's Antarctica, a giant continent made of ice, surrounded by icy water. It's so cold, it's like living in a giant freezer!
What's It Like in the Ice?
These places are mostly covered in ice and snow. In the Arctic, you'll find lots of sea ice, which is like a giant frozen raft floating on the ocean. Antarctica is a huge landmass covered in a massive ice sheet, thicker than many tall buildings stacked on top of each other! It's a very special kind of place, very different from your backyard.
Who Lives in the Cold?
Even though it's freezing, some amazing animals call the polar regions home! Think of fluffy polar bears in the Arctic, or waddling penguins in Antarctica. These animals have special ways to stay warm, like thick fur or blubber. They are experts at living in the cold, finding food in the icy waters and on the snowy land.
Why Are the Poles Important?
These icy places are like Earth's giant air conditioners, helping to keep our whole planet cool. The ice reflects sunlight, stopping Earth from getting too hot. They are also home to unique animals and hold lots of secrets about our planet's past. Protecting these special regions helps protect our whole world!
