Key Facts
Meet Plutarco, Mexico's Big Boss!
Plutarco Elías Calles was a very important person in Mexico a long time ago. He was born in a place called Sonora and became the President of Mexico. Think of him like the captain of a big ship, steering the country!
He was a soldier before he was president, fighting in the Mexican Revolution to make Mexico a better place. He had lots of plans to help people, like building schools and roads, and making sure everyone was treated fairly.
From Soldier to President's Seat!
Calles started as a brave soldier in the Mexican Revolution. He was so good at leading that he became a general! After the fighting, he moved into politics, helping other presidents.
Then, in 1924, he ran for president himself! His campaign was like a big promise party, saying he would share land, make sure justice was fair, and help workers. He won and started making changes, like building more schools and improving hospitals.
It was a time of big dreams for Mexico!
Uh Oh, A Big Disagreement!
After being president, Calles wanted Mexico to be more separate from the church. He made new rules that some people didn't like, especially those who were very religious. This disagreement grew into a big conflict called the Cristero War.
It was a sad time when people fought over their beliefs. Calles also started a powerful political party that stayed in charge for a very, very long time, like a team that kept winning every game for decades!
The Leader Who Kept Leading (Sort Of!)
Even after his time as president was over, Calles was still super influential. He was like the 'kingmaker' behind the scenes, helping choose who became president next. This period is called the Maximato.
He helped start the Institutional Revolutionary Party, which became a very strong political group. Although he wasn't president anymore, his ideas and decisions still guided Mexico for many years, showing how much one person can impact a country's future.
