The importance of plant genetic resources cannot be overstated, especially in the face of global challenges like climate change, emerging pests and diseases, and increasing population demands. Genetic diversity is the engine of adaptation. A broad genetic base within a crop species provides the raw material for breeders to develop new varieties that can withstand higher temperatures, altered rainfall patterns, or novel pathogens.

Many traditional varieties are disappearing as farmers adopt uniform, high-yielding modern cultivars. To counter this, a global network of conservation efforts is underway, primarily through the establishment and maintenance of ex situ genebanks.
These facilities, managed by national and international institutions, store vast collections of seeds and other plant materials under controlled conditions to ensure their long-term viability. In situ conservation, which focuses on protecting wild relatives and traditional varieties within their natural habitats, is also crucial. International agreements and collaborative projects, such as those coordinated by the FAO, aim to ensure the equitable sharing of these vital resources and promote their sustainable use for the benefit of all humanity.
