Key Facts
What's Hiding Inside?
Deep, deep inside every planet, even our Earth, is something called a core. It's like the planet's super-hot heart! Some cores are all liquid, like a giant ball of melted metal.
Others are a mix of solid and liquid, like a warm, gooey center. The size of these cores can be HUGE! Our Moon's core is only about 20% of its whole size, but Mercury's core is a whopping 85% – that's like a tiny candy shell around a giant chocolate center!
How Do They Stay So Hot?
Planetary cores are incredibly hot, hotter than the surface of the Sun! This heat comes from a few places. When planets are born, they are made of lots of stuff crashing together, which creates a lot of heat.
Also, some materials inside the core are naturally radioactive, meaning they slowly break down and release heat, like a tiny, never-ending heater. This heat is so powerful it can even melt rock and metal!
Why Are Cores So Important?
Even though we can't see them, planet cores are super important! On Earth, our core's heat and movement create a giant magnetic shield. This shield protects us from harmful rays from the Sun, like an invisible superhero cape. Without it, life on Earth might not be possible! The core also helps make planets round and influences how they spin.
Peeking Inside: A Tricky Mission!
Scientists can't just drill a hole to the center of a planet – it's way too hot and deep! So, they have to be clever. They study how earthquake waves travel through the Earth, like listening to its heartbeat. They also look at how planets move and spin. It’s like being a detective, using clues to figure out what’s happening in a place no one can ever visit!
