Meet the Pope Who Was Also a King!
Imagine being the leader of a whole religion AND the ruler of a tiny new country! That was Pope Pius XI. His real name was Ambrogio Damiano Achille Ratti, but everyone called him Pope Pius XI when he was in charge of the Catholic Church.
He was the Pope from 1922 to 1939. He was super important because he was the very first leader of Vatican City, a brand new country made just for the Pope and his helpers!
Writing Letters to the World!
Pope Pius XI loved to write special letters called encyclicals. One letter, called 'Quadragesimo anno,' talked about how some rich people were being greedy and how it wasn't fair to workers. He also wrote 'Quas primas' to make sure everyone remembered the importance of Jesus Christ. He even wrote about how important it is to learn and study, especially at a special school called the Angelicum!
Making Peace and Speaking Up!
This Pope was a super negotiator! He made a special agreement with Italy that created Vatican City. He also signed a deal with Germany, but later he got very upset when Germany didn't keep its promises and started being mean.
He wrote another letter, 'Mit brennender Sorge,' which means 'With Burning Concern,' to tell everyone how worried he was about what was happening. He also helped make sure important people who were good and holy were remembered and celebrated.
A Pope Who Loved to Learn and Teach!
Pope Pius XI believed that learning was super important for everyone. He encouraged people to join groups like Catholic Action to help spread good ideas. He also loved to honor saints who had done amazing things, like Saint Thomas More and Saint Bernadette of Lourdes. He even gave a special title to a wise thinker named Albertus Magnus because his writings were so powerful and inspiring.
