Meet the Giant Rock!

On a small moon called Phobos, which orbits Mars, there's a super-duper big rock! It's called a monolith because it's one giant piece of stone. This rock is so huge, it's like a building that's taller than a giraffe and as wide as a school bus! It's a bright spot on the moon and makes a long, dark shadow when the sun shines on it. It's a very special sight on this little moon.

Who Found This Space Boulder?

This giant rock wasn't always known. A person named Efrain Palermo was looking very closely at pictures from space probes. He spotted this big, bright boulder! Later, another person named Lan Fleming, who worked with NASA, also saw it and confirmed it was real. They were like space detectives finding this amazing discovery on Phobos!

Why Is This Rock So Cool?

Scientists think this giant rock might have been blasted off Mars by a huge asteroid hitting the planet! It's like a piece of Mars that flew off and landed on its moon. It's also near a giant hole on Phobos called Stickney crater. This makes it a really interesting place for scientists to study and learn more about how moons and planets are made.

Dreaming of a Space Trip!

Because the monolith is so interesting, some space explorers have ideas for a special mission to visit it! They want to send a robot spaceship, like a little explorer, to land near the rock. This robot would have special tools to study the rock and the moon. Even a famous astronaut, Buzz Aldrin, thinks it's a great idea to go and see this giant space boulder!
