He was so handsome people called him 'Philip the Fair', but he was also known as the 'Iron King' because he was so tough!

Who Was King Philip the Fair?

Imagine a king who looked super handsome, so much so that people called him 'Philip the Fair'! But don't let that fool you. Philip IV of France was also known as the 'Iron King' because he was super strong-willed and didn't back down from anything.

He was born a prince and became king of France a long, long time ago, in 1285. He ruled for almost 30 years, making big changes that shaped France into the country it is today. He was also king of Navarre and Count of Champagne!

Philip's Big Plans for France!

Philip IV wanted France to be super strong, with him in charge of everything! He didn't like it when powerful lords or the church had too much say. So, he hired smart helpers, like Guillaume de Nogaret and Enguerrand de Marigny, to run things for him.

He made rules and sometimes went to war to make sure everyone listened to him. This helped turn France from a place where lords had lots of power into a country where the king was the boss of everyone. It was like changing from a playground where everyone plays their own game to a classroom where the teacher makes the rules!

Battles and Big Fights!

King Philip IV was busy! He fought with England over some land in France. He also had a big fight with the people of Flanders, who didn't want him to rule them.

They even beat his army in a famous battle called the Battle of the Golden Spurs! But Philip eventually won and got more land and money. He also had problems with groups like the Jews and the Knights Templar, who were very rich and powerful.

He eventually kicked the Jews out of France and got rid of the Knights Templar. He even argued with the Pope, the head of the Catholic Church, and had him captured for a few days!

A Royal Family Mess!

Even kings have family drama! Towards the end of his life, King Philip IV had a scandal with his sons' wives. They were accused of not being loyal to the princes.

Philip IV had three sons who all became kings after him: Louis X, Philip V, and Charles IV. But sadly, they all died without having sons of their own to take over. This caused a big problem for who would be the next king, and it eventually led to a very long war called the Hundred Years' War.

So, even though Philip was the 'Iron King,' his family's story had a surprising twist!
