Petroleum is a thick, dark liquid found deep inside the Earth. It's like a treasure chest of energy! When we find it, we can turn it into amazing things we use every day. Think of it as ancient sunshine stored underground for millions of years. It's not just one thing, but a mix of many tiny bits that come together to make this special liquid.

A super long time ago, tiny plants and animals lived in the oceans. When they died, they sank to the bottom and got buried under layers of mud and sand. Over millions of years, the pressure and heat from deep inside the Earth squished them together. This amazing transformation turned them into petroleum! It’s like a super-slow-motion cooking process that made this energy-rich liquid.
