Meet the Petersen House!

Imagine a cozy house on a street in Washington, D.C. That's the Petersen House! It's a special old building, built a super long time ago, way back in 1849.

That's even before your grandparents were born! It looks like many other houses on the street, but it has a very important story to tell. It's made of bricks, just like some schools or houses you might see.

This house is like a time capsule, holding memories from long ago.

A Very Famous Visitor!

This house is famous because a very important person, President Abraham Lincoln, spent his last moments here. He was shot at a theater across the street and brought to the Petersen House to rest. Doctors tried their best, but sadly, he passed away in the house. It was a very sad time for the whole country. Imagine a famous leader needing a place to recover, and this house was chosen.

Who Lived Here First?

Before President Lincoln, a tailor named William A. Petersen built this house. He was a tailor, which means he made clothes! He was from Germany and came to America. Later, another important person, John C. Breckinridge, who became a vice-president, even rented this house. So, many interesting people have walked through its doors over the years.

A House for Everyone to See!

Today, the Petersen House isn't just a regular house anymore. It's a museum! This means people can visit and learn all about its history. It's looked after by the National Park Service, who make sure it's kept safe and sound for everyone to explore. You can walk through the rooms and imagine what it was like when President Lincoln was there. It's like visiting a real-life history book!
