Perioeci: Sparta's Neighbors!

The Perioeci were like the helpful neighbors of the famous Spartan warriors! They lived in towns all around Sparta, in places called Laconia and Messenia. Think of them as living in the suburbs of a big, important city. They weren't full Spartan citizens, but they were super important to how Sparta worked. Their name even means 'those living around'!

While the main Spartans were busy training to be soldiers, the Perioeci were the busy bees of the economy! They were the shopkeepers, the craftspeople, and the builders. They made all the cool weapons and armor for the Spartan army.

They also ran the businesses and traded with other places. It was like they were the backbone of Sparta, doing all the jobs the main Spartans thought were too 'boring'!

Here's a cool fact: the Perioeci were the only ones allowed to travel outside of Sparta's land freely! The main Spartans had to ask permission to leave. So, the Perioeci were like the official travelers and traders for Sparta. They could go to different cities and bring back new ideas or goods. They also owned helpers called helots, just like the main Spartans did.

Even though they weren't full citizens, the Perioeci were brave soldiers too! They fought alongside the Spartans in battles. Imagine a team where some players are the star athletes and others are the amazing support crew – that was the Perioeci and the Spartiates. They helped protect their land and make Sparta strong.
