Meet the Pouchy Flyers!

Pelicans are big, beautiful birds that love to hang out near water. They have super long beaks with a stretchy pouch underneath, like a built-in fishing net! They use this pouch to scoop up fish and water.

When they're done, they tilt their heads to let the water drain out and gobble up their tasty meal. Some pelicans are white, and some are brown or gray. They are excellent swimmers and can also fly really well, soaring high in the sky!

Where Do These Water Wizards Live?

Pelicans live all around the world, but they prefer warmer places. You can find them near oceans, lakes, and rivers. They love places where there are lots of fish to eat! Some pelicans live in North America, others in South America, Europe, Asia, and even Africa. They build their nests on the ground or in trees, often in big groups called colonies. It’s like a giant bird neighborhood!

Pelican's Super Scooper Skills!

The most amazing thing about a pelican is its beak pouch! It can hold a lot of water and fish, sometimes more than its tummy can hold! They are also great divers. Some pelicans dive from high up in the air, plunging into the water to catch their dinner. Others swim on the surface and dip their heads in to scoop up fish. It’s like they have a built-in fishing rod and net all in one!

Pelican Families and Friends

Pelicans usually have one to three baby birds, called chicks, at a time. The parents take turns keeping the chicks warm and feeding them. Pelican chicks are born without feathers and are very hungry! They grow up fast, and soon they are ready to learn how to fly and fish. Pelicans can live for a long time, sometimes as long as 20 years, which is longer than many pet dogs!
