Who Was This Big Boss?

Patriarch Nikon was like the head honcho of the Russian Orthodox Church a super long time ago! He was born in a small village in Russia around 1605. Think of him as the principal of a giant school, but for churches!

He was in charge of all the priests and churches in Russia. He was a very strong leader and wanted things to be just right. He even had a big argument with the Tsar, who was like the king!

Nikon's Awesome Building Projects!

Nikon loved to build! His most famous project was a brand-new, super fancy monastery called the New Jerusalem Monastery. It was like building a whole new, amazing playground, but for monks!

He wanted it to look like the holy places in Jerusalem. He spent a lot of money and time making it beautiful with big churches and walls. It was so grand, it was like a whole city built just for prayer and learning.

Changing the Rules of the Game!

Nikon decided that the old church books and ways of praying in Russia were a little bit different from the original Greek ways. So, he made big changes! He wanted everyone to pray and read their holy books the same way, like everyone in class doing the same math problem.

This made some people very happy, but others got really upset because they liked the old ways. It was a big deal that caused a lot of discussion!

Why We Still Remember Nikon

Even though he had arguments and made changes that some people didn't like, Nikon was a very important person. He made the Russian Orthodox Church stronger and more organized. His building projects, like the New Jerusalem Monastery, are still there today and are super beautiful!

He showed everyone that one person could have big ideas and try to make them happen, even if it was hard. He's a big part of Russia's history!
