Key Facts
Meet the Royal Playground!
Once upon a time, there was a super special place called the Palace of Placentia. It was like a giant playground for English royalty, built right by the River Thames. Prince Humphrey started building it a super long time ago, in 1443.
It wasn't just one building; it grew and changed over many years, like a LEGO castle you keep adding to. It was a place for fun, parties, and getting away from the busy city.
From Castle to Hospital!
This palace had many lives! First, Prince Humphrey built a tower on a hill nearby, which was later called Greenwich Castle. Then, King Henry VII made the riverside palace much bigger and fancier around the year 1500.
Later, a beautiful house called the Queen's House was added. But then, the old palace was taken down, and a new one started to be built. Finally, it was turned into a hospital for sailors in the 1690s.
So, it went from a royal home to a place for healing!
Why It Was So Cool
The Palace of Placentia was important because it was a favorite spot for kings and queens to relax and have fun. Think of it like their super-fancy vacation home! It was a place where important decisions might have been made, but mostly it was for enjoying life.
It also had a special tower that was later replaced by a place that still exists today: the Royal Observatory, where people study the stars!
Amazing Things That Stayed
Even though the main palace is gone, some parts of its story are still around. The beautiful Queen's House, built in the early 1600s, still stands today and is super pretty. Also, the area where the palace once was is now home to the Old Royal Naval College.
This is a huge place where people learn about ships and the sea. So, the spirit of the Palace of Placentia lives on in these amazing buildings!
