Meet the Wiggling Water Wonders!

Otters are super cool mammals that LOVE to swim! They have long, wiggly bodies, short legs, and a strong tail that helps them zoom through the water. Their fur is incredibly thick, like wearing a cozy, waterproof coat, keeping them warm even in chilly rivers and oceans.

There are 13 different kinds of otters, and they can be found all over the world, from icy places to warm, sunny coasts. They are playful and curious, often seen sliding down muddy banks or juggling pebbles!

Otter Homes: Where the Water Flows!

Otters build their homes, called holts, near water. Some otters live in rivers and lakes, digging cozy dens in the riverbanks. Others, like sea otters, spend almost their entire lives in the ocean, floating on their backs!

You can find otters in North and South America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. They need clean water to find their food and keep their fur in tip-top shape. Imagine living in a house with a water slide right outside your door – that's kind of like an otter's home!

Yummy Otter Snacks!

Otters are carnivores, which means they love to eat meat! Their favorite meals are usually fish, but they also munch on frogs, crabs, and other tasty treats they find underwater. Sea otters have a special trick: they use rocks to crack open shellfish!

They’ll float on their backs, place a rock on their chest, and smash clams or mussels against it. It’s like having a built-in kitchen tool to get to the yummy insides. They eat a lot to keep their energy up for all that swimming and playing.

Otter Babies and Super Skills!

Baby otters are called pups, and they are super cute! They are born blind and helpless, but they grow fast. Otter moms are very good at teaching their pups how to swim and find food.

Otters have amazing eyesight both above and underwater, and they can hold their breath for a long time. Some otters can even close their ears and nostrils when they dive! They are truly masters of the water, using their paws to feel for food in murky waters and their strong tails for steering.
