Meet the Space Explorer!

OSIRIS-REx was like a super-smart robot spaceship sent on a very important mission. Its job was to travel to a giant space rock called an asteroid, grab a piece of it, and bring it all the way back to Earth! This asteroid was named Bennu, and it's like a time capsule from when our solar system was just born.

Bringing back a piece of Bennu helps us learn about the very beginning of our planet and even where the ingredients for life came from!

The Long Journey to Bennu

OSIRIS-REx started its amazing adventure way back in 2016. It flew past Earth to get a boost and then zoomed through space for a long time until it found Bennu in 2018. For two whole years, the spaceship carefully looked at Bennu's surface, searching for the perfect spot to collect its treasure.

It finally touched down and grabbed a sample in 2020. Then, it made the long trip back, arriving on Earth in 2023 with its precious space rock cargo!

Why This Space Rock is So Cool!

Bennu is special because it's a very old asteroid, like a leftover piece from when the planets were forming. It's super dark and hasn't changed much over billions of years. Scientists think Bennu might have things like water and even the building blocks for life, like tiny ingredients for making living things.

By studying the sample, scientists hope to understand how our solar system got started and how life might have begun on Earth!

Bringing Space Secrets Home!

OSIRIS-REx was the first spaceship from the United States to bring back a piece of an asteroid. It's like being the first person to bring back a dinosaur bone from a faraway land! Other countries have done it too, but this was a huge achievement for NASA.

The samples are now being studied by scientists to unlock the secrets of the early solar system and maybe even the origins of life itself. It's a real-life space detective story!
