Why Did We Need This Order?

Back in 1917, King George V wanted to say 'thank you' to people who did amazing things for the British Empire. It was like giving out gold stars for being really, really good at helping others, whether they were near or far away. He wanted to make sure everyone felt appreciated for their hard work and kindness.

What Kind of Super Helpers Get Medals?

This special award isn't just for knights in shining armor! It's for all sorts of people who do important jobs. Think about doctors, nurses, teachers, scientists, or even people who help out in their community. The award has different levels, like different colored belts in karate, to show how much they helped. The highest levels can even make someone a Sir or a Dame!

A Medal for Everyone!

The Order of the British Empire has five different levels, like steps on a ladder. The very top two levels are for people who get to be called Sir or Dame. There's also a special medal called the British Empire Medal, which is like a special sticker for people who have done wonderful things but aren't quite members of the main order.

It's all about recognizing lots of different kinds of good deeds.

Who Started This Awesome Idea?

The whole idea for this order came from a king named George V. He was the boss of the British Empire a long, long time ago, in 1917. He thought it was super important to give special recognition to people who were making a big difference. He wanted to make sure that people in the United Kingdom and people living in other parts of the Empire got noticed for their contributions.
