Meet the Knights of the Red Cross!

Long, long ago, in a land called Spain, there were special knights called the Order of Santiago. Their job was super important! They wore a bright red cross on their clothes, like a superhero symbol.

They were like the protectors of the roads, making sure people traveling to a special church called the Way of St. James were safe. They also helped defend their country and keep it safe from invaders.

A Special Mission from the Past

These knights started their adventure way back in the 1100s. That's almost a thousand years ago! They were named after Saint James, who is the special helper, or patron saint, of Spain. Their main goal was to help people who were on a long journey to visit a holy place. They also fought to protect their land and keep it for their people. It was a very brave and important job!

Why They Were So Cool

The Order of Santiago was famous for its bravery and its cool red cross symbol. You can still see their symbol in old paintings and buildings! Not just anyone could join; you had to be chosen. They were like a super-team of knights who were dedicated to helping others and defending their country. They were a big part of Spain's history, like a famous team in a big game.

Knights Through Time

For a long time, the Order of Santiago was very powerful. But as time went on, things changed. The kings and queens of Spain eventually took over the leadership of the knights. Later, there were times when the Order was stopped, but then it was brought back again! Today, it's still around as a special group that remembers its history and its important work.
