Germany's Shiny Badge of Honor!

Germany has a super special award called the Order of Merit. It's like a medal for people who do amazing things for their country! It was started a long, long time ago, in 1951, by the first President of Germany, Theodor Heuss.

Think of it as a way for Germany to say 'Great job!' to its citizens and even people from other countries who help make the world a better place. It's a very important award!

Who Gets to Wear the Shiny Star?

Lots and lots of people have received this award, over 262,000! That's more people than can fit in a giant stadium! They give it to people for all sorts of reasons, like being a brilliant scientist, a kind helper, or someone who makes art that makes people happy.

It's not just for Germans; people from all over the world can get this special medal. It shows that good deeds are celebrated everywhere!

How Many Shiny Stars Are Given Out?

In the past, Germany used to give out thousands of these awards every year. But now, they give out fewer, like maybe only around 1,500 each year. This means the award is extra special! They also make sure that lots of women get the award too, about one-third of all the people who receive it. This shows that Germany believes everyone, no matter if they are a boy or a girl, can do amazing things!

Not All Places Give Out Medals!

Most parts of Germany have their own special awards, like their own mini-medals. But two cities, Bremen and Hamburg, are a bit different. They don't give out these kinds of medals because of old traditions! Even famous people from these cities sometimes say 'no thank you' to awards. It's a funny little quirk that makes Germany even more interesting!
