Schools That Breathe!

Have you ever been in a classroom? Usually, they have walls and a roof to keep the weather out. But imagine a classroom with NO walls! That's what an open air school was like. These special schools were built a long, long time ago, mostly before World War II. They were designed so that kids could spend all day outside, breathing fresh air. It was like a giant, healthy playground for learning!

Why No Walls?

Back then, many children got sick with something called tuberculosis. Doctors and teachers thought that fresh air and sunshine could help make kids stronger and fight off sickness. So, they built these schools with big windows that opened wide, or sometimes no windows at all, and even no walls on one side!

The classrooms were often in quiet places, far away from noisy, dusty cities, so the air was super clean.

Learning in the Breeze!

Kids in open air schools learned reading, writing, and math, just like you do. But they did it while sitting outside, maybe on a porch or in a room with lots of open space. They wore warm clothes, even hats and gloves, to stay cozy when it was chilly.

The teachers made sure the children were comfortable while they learned and breathed in all that good, clean air. It was a very different way to go to school!

Super Healthy Schools!

These schools were like a special medicine for kids. By being outside all the time, children were less likely to get sick. The fresh air helped their lungs and made their bodies stronger. It was a brilliant idea to combine learning with staying healthy. Even though we don't see many open air schools today, the idea of fresh air being good for us is still super important!
