Key Facts
Meet the Giant Road!
Highway 401 is a super-duper long road in Ontario, Canada. It's so long, it stretches 828 kilometers, which is like driving from your house to Grandma's house many, many times! It starts in a city called Windsor and goes all the way to the border of Quebec.
This road is so busy, it's like a giant ant highway with cars zooming everywhere, especially in Toronto. It's one of the widest roads in Canada, with lots of lanes for all the cars!
How Did This Big Road Get Built?
Long ago, before you were even born, people started building parts of this road. First, there were three smaller roads that were connected. Then, bit by bit, they joined them all together.
In 1964, the whole road was finally finished, connecting Windsor to Quebec! Later, they even gave it a fancy name, the Macdonald-Cartier Freeway, to honor important people from Canada's past. It took many years to build this amazing road!
Why Is This Road So Important?
Highway 401 is super important because it's like the main street for a huge part of Canada. Over half of all the people in Canada live near this road! It helps people travel to different cities, and it helps trucks carry important things like food and toys to stores. It's also called the 'Highway of Heroes' because sometimes, when brave soldiers come home, they travel on this road.
Zooming Along Safely!
To keep everyone safe, there are special rules on Highway 401. Most of the time, cars can drive up to 100 kilometers per hour, which is pretty fast! But sometimes, like in busy spots or when there's construction, the speed limit is lower, like 80 kilometers per hour. Police officers from the Ontario Provincial Police watch over the road to make sure everyone follows the rules and drives safely.
