Meet the Giant Building!

Old St. Peter's Basilica was a HUGE church that stood for a very, very long time, from the 300s all the way to the 1500s! That's longer than your great-great-great-great-grandparents have been alive. It was built where a big race track used to be. Today, a new, even bigger St. Peter's Basilica stands in its place in Vatican City.

Who Built This Big Place?

A very important Roman Emperor named Constantine I started building this amazing church. He wanted to create a special place to honor Saint Peter. It took a long time to build, and many people worked on it. It was like a giant construction project that lasted for years and years, making it a truly special building for its time.

Why Was It So Special?

This church was super important because it was built over a very special spot. People believed Saint Peter, one of Jesus's closest friends, was buried there. So, it became a very important place for people to visit and pray. It was like the most famous landmark in the whole world for many centuries!

A Church That Lasted Forever (Almost!)

Old St. Peter's Basilica was around for so long that it saw many, many changes in the world. It stood for over 1,000 years! That's longer than many castles or even entire cities have been around. Eventually, it was taken down to build the new St. Peter's Basilica that we see today, which is even bigger and grander.
