Oestrogen hormone 14
Solanum laciniatum Aiton Solanaceae. Kangaroo Apple. Evergreen shrub. Distribution: New Zealand and the east coast of Australia. It contains steroidal saponins that can be converted into steroids, including progesterone, oestrogens, cortisone, prednisolone etc. In 1943, Professor Russell Marker discovered a method of obtaining an unsaturated steroidal saponine, diosogenin, from Mexican yam (Dioscorea mexicana), which can easily and cheaply be converted into steroids, such as prednisone and progesterone, reducing the price of steroid production to a fraction (0.5%) of its former cost. For 20 years drug companies showed little interest, and it was only as a result of Professor Marker forming his own company, and the concerted efforts of several gynaecologists, physiologists and birth-control advocates, that the contraceptive pill was ‘born’ in 1960. Photographed in the Medicinal Garden of the Royal College of Physicians, London.

Meet Your Body's Amazing Helper!

Imagine your body has tiny helpers that make you grow and change. Oestrogen is one of these special helpers! It's a kind of chemical messenger that travels around your body, telling different parts what to do. It helps you grow taller, develop strong bones, and even helps your brain work its best. Think of it like a friendly coach giving instructions to all the players on your body's team!

Where Does This Helper Come From?

Oestrogen is made in different parts of your body, but mostly in your ovaries, which are like little factories inside girls. Boys also make a little bit of oestrogen, but they have other helpers that do most of the growing. When you're a baby, your body starts making oestrogen.

As you get older, especially when you become a teenager, oestrogen plays a big role in all the changes you go through, like growing bigger and stronger.

Oestrogen's Superpowers!

Oestrogen has lots of superpowers! One of its biggest jobs is helping girls' bodies change during puberty. It helps your breasts grow and your hips get wider. It also helps your bones stay strong, like building a sturdy house. Even your mood can be affected by oestrogen, helping you feel happy and energetic. It's like having a secret ingredient for growing up healthy and strong!

Why Oestrogen is So Important!

Oestrogen is super important for keeping your body working right. It helps make sure your bones don't break easily, like a superhero shield. For girls, it's also key for having babies later in life. When oestrogen levels are just right, you feel good and your body functions smoothly. It's a vital part of being healthy from when you're little all the way through adulthood.
