Key Facts
What Are These Gigantic Gorges?
Oceanic trenches are like super long, super narrow ditches on the ocean floor. They are much deeper than the rest of the seafloor around them. Some are as wide as a few school buses parked side-by-side, but they can stretch for thousands of kilometers, longer than many countries! Most of these deep trenches are found around the Pacific Ocean, which is the biggest ocean on Earth.
Deeper Than You Can Imagine!
The deepest part of any trench is called the Challenger Deep, and it's in the Mariana Trench. It's so deep, if you dropped the world's tallest skyscraper into it, the top would still be underwater! It's about 11 kilometers (nearly 7 miles) down. That's deeper than Mount Everest is tall!
Why Are They So Deep?
Trenches form when two giant pieces of Earth's crust, called tectonic plates, crash into each other. One plate slides underneath the other, creating a deep dip. It's like when two rugs wrinkle up and make a low spot. This process happens very slowly, over millions of years.
Life in the Deep Dark
Even though it's super dark and cold in the trenches, some amazing creatures live there! They don't need sunlight because they get energy from chemicals in the water. Scientists are worried that trash, like plastic bottles, is sinking down into these deep places and hurting the animals.
