Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis)

Key Facts
Where in the World Do They Live?
Imagine a bird that loves cold, chilly places! Northern Fulmars live in the northern parts of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. They are most often found in the Arctic, where the water is super cold. Sometimes, one might even get lost and fly all the way to the other side of the world, near New Zealand! They are like little feathered explorers of the big, blue sea.
Feathered Friends or Gull Look-alikes?
Northern Fulmars look a bit like seagulls, with their white bodies and grey wings. But guess what? They are actually part of a different bird family! They have a special nose with tubes on top of their beak. Their beaks are also made of cool, hard plates. These birds are built for life at sea, with amazing ways to survive in the ocean.
Super Smelly Defense!
Fulmars have a secret weapon! They can spray a yucky, oily liquid from their mouths. This smelly spray is made in their tummies and helps them when they are hungry or need to protect themselves. If a predator tries to bother them, this stinky spray can mess up their feathers and even make them sick. It's like a stinky shield!
Two Colors of Fulmars
Did you know that Northern Fulmars come in different colors? Some have mostly white bodies and grey wings, like a light-colored cloud. Others are all over grey, like a stormy sky. These different colors help them blend in with their surroundings. Sometimes you can even find birds that are a mix of both colors!
