The First Flying Engineer!

Imagine being the very first person to do something super important! That's what Norman B. Hall did.

He was an engineer for the U.S. Coast Guard, which is like a team that helps people at sea. In 1916, he became the FIRST aviation engineer ever!

This means he was the first one to help the Coast Guard use airplanes. He loved figuring out how things worked and how to make them better, especially for helping others.

Dreaming of Sky-High Rescues!

Norman B. Hall worked on ships, but he also looked up at the sky and wondered if airplanes could help. He talked to his friends on the ship, Captain Chiswell and Lieutenant Stone, about using planes for rescue missions.

Captain Chiswell thought it was a great idea! He encouraged Norman to go learn all about airplanes. So, Norman went to a special factory to study how planes were built and fixed.

It was like going to airplane school!

Climbing the Ranks Like a Ladder!

Norman B. Hall was really good at his job, so he got promoted a lot! He started as a cadet engineer and then became a third lieutenant, then a second lieutenant, and then a first lieutenant.

He even became a lieutenant commander and a commander! Later, he became a captain, and then a commodore, and finally a rear admiral when he retired. That's a lot of steps up the ladder, showing how much he achieved!

A Hero in Wartime!

During a big war, Norman B. Hall had even more important jobs. He helped keep ports safe, which is where ships dock. He also worked with people who made sure oil was safe during the war. He was part of a council that helped the merchant marine, which are the ships that carry important things. For all his hard work, he even received a special award called the Legion of Merit. He was a true hero!
