Ng Chee Meng

Ng Chee Meng's formative years were steeped in military discipline and strategic leadership within the Republic of Singapore Air Force (RSAF). Enlisting in 1986, he dedicated nearly three decades to national defense, culminating in two of the highest military appointments. His tenure as Chief of Air Force from 2009 to 2013 saw him at the helm of a sophisticated aerial defense system, demanding not only technical expertise but also profound leadership to manage complex operations and personnel.

This was followed by an even more expansive role as Chief of Defence Force from 2013 to 2015, where he oversaw the entirety of Singapore's armed forces. This period of intense responsibility provided him with unparalleled experience in strategic planning, crisis management, and inter-service coordination, skills that would prove invaluable in his subsequent civilian career. His military background instilled a deep sense of duty and a results-oriented approach that has characterized his public service.

The year 2015 marked a pivotal transition as Ng Chee Meng left the military to enter politics, joining the ruling People's Action Party (PAP). He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP), initially representing the Pasir Ris–Punggol Group Representation Constituency before moving to contest in Sengkang GRC in 2020. His early political career was marked by significant ministerial appointments.

He served as the Minister for Education (Schools) from 2015 to 2018, a critical period where he influenced educational policies and curriculum development for primary and secondary students. Subsequently, he held a position as Minister in the Prime Minister's Office from 2018 to 2020, engaging with a broad spectrum of government portfolios. The 2020 general election presented a significant challenge, as the PAP team he led for Sengkang GRC was defeated by the opposition Workers' Party, a notable outcome in Singaporean politics.

This electoral setback, however, did not diminish his influence within the party or the labor movement.

Concurrent with his political roles, Ng Chee Meng has been a formidable force in Singapore's labor movement. Since 2018, he has served as the Secretary-General of the National Trades Union Congress (NTUC), the primary national confederation of trade unions. In this capacity, he is a key advocate for workers' rights, welfare, and career development.

His leadership at NTUC involves complex negotiations with employers and government bodies to ensure fair labor practices, competitive wages, and improved working conditions. He has been instrumental in driving initiatives aimed at upskilling and reskilling the workforce to adapt to evolving economic landscapes. His role as Secretary-General underscores the interconnectedness of labor and national policy, positioning him as a crucial figure in Singapore's socio-economic fabric.

His continued leadership in this role, even after losing his parliamentary seat in 2020, highlights his deep commitment to the labor cause.

Ng Chee Meng's political journey exemplifies resilience and strategic adaptation. Despite the electoral defeat in 2020, he remained an active and influential figure, particularly within the NTUC. His political comeback was solidified in the 2025 general election, where he successfully contested and won the newly formed Jalan Kayu Single Member Constituency.

The narrow victory margin of 809 votes underscores the competitive nature of the political landscape and the importance of grassroots engagement. This win signifies a renewed mandate from the electorate and a testament to his continued relevance and appeal. His ability to navigate electoral challenges and re-establish a strong presence in Parliament demonstrates his enduring capacity to connect with voters and contribute to national governance, building upon his extensive experience in both the military and the labor movement.
