New York City Draft Riots
Key Facts
Where Did the Trouble Start?
Long ago, in the summer of 1863, a big city called New York City was the place where something very upsetting happened. It was a busy city with lots of people living close together. The trouble started in a part of the city called Lower Manhattan.
This area was full of streets and buildings, and it was where many working people lived and worked. It was a hot July, and tensions were building up like a balloon about to pop!
Why Were People So Mad?
There was a big war happening called the Civil War, and the government decided to make men go and fight. This was called a 'draft.' Many people, especially working-class folks, felt it wasn't fair. They thought rich people could pay to get out of fighting, but they couldn't.
This made them very angry, and they started to protest. It was like a big schoolyard argument that got out of control, but with much bigger consequences.
When the Protests Got Scary
The protests, which started on July 13, 1863, quickly turned into something much scarier. People started breaking things and fighting. Sadly, the anger turned towards African Americans, and many innocent people were hurt.
Buildings were destroyed, including a special place for orphaned children. The city was in chaos, and the police and even soldiers had a hard time stopping it. It was a very sad time for many people in the city.
After the Storm
After four days of riots, the city was left in a mess. Many people were hurt or had lost their homes. The riots were so bad that they changed the city.
Some African American families decided it wasn't safe to stay and moved away. The government had to send in lots of soldiers to calm things down. This event showed how much anger and frustration people were feeling during that difficult time in history.
