Key Facts
Hooray! It's a New Year!
Imagine your birthday, but for everyone in the whole world! That's kind of like New Year's Day. It's a special day when we say goodbye to the old year and welcome the brand new one.
People celebrate all around the globe with parties, yummy food, and watching fireworks light up the sky. It's a time for fresh starts and making exciting plans for the future. Think of it as a giant, worldwide party to kick off a new adventure!
When Did This Party Start?
People have been celebrating the start of a new year for thousands of years! The ancient Romans were some of the first to celebrate on January 1st, way back around 45 BC. They even named the month January after a god named Janus, who had two faces β one looking back at the past and one looking forward to the future.
Over time, different countries and cultures have had their own special ways of celebrating, but January 1st became the most popular day for most of the world.
Why We Make Resolutions!
Have you ever made a promise to yourself to do something new or better? That's called a resolution! On New Year's Day, lots of people make resolutions.
Maybe you want to learn to ride your bike without training wheels, read more books, or be extra kind to your friends. It's like setting a goal for the whole year. Even though some resolutions are hard to keep, it's fun to try and make ourselves even more awesome in the new year!
Party Time Around the World!
New Year's Day is celebrated everywhere, but in different ways! In Scotland, they have a tradition called 'Hogmanay' where people visit friends and sing songs. In Spain, people eat 12 grapes at midnight, one for each chime of the clock, to bring good luck.
And in many places, like New York City's Times Square, huge crowds gather to watch a giant ball drop from a tall building right as the clock strikes midnight. It's a super exciting way to ring in the new year!
