WOW Fact
The Netherlands is so flat that much of it is below sea level and protected by giant walls called dikes!

Where is the Netherlands?

Imagine a country that's mostly flat, like a giant pancake! That's the Netherlands. It's in Europe, a continent far away. It's a bit smaller than the state of West Virginia in the USA. Many parts of the Netherlands are even lower than the sea! They use special walls called dikes to keep the water out. This special land is where the story of World War II in the Netherlands begins.

A Peaceful Plan Goes Wrong

The Netherlands wanted to be friends with everyone and stay out of big fights. They declared they were neutral, meaning they wouldn't pick sides in a war. But in 1940, a powerful country called Germany invaded them anyway! It was a big surprise. The fighting didn't last long, only a few days. The Dutch leaders and the royal family had to leave their homes and go to a safe place far away.

Life Under New Rules

After the invasion, Germany took control of the Netherlands. For a while, things were okay, but then the war got harder for everyone. The German leaders made the Dutch people do many things they didn't want to. Sadly, many Jewish people living in the Netherlands were taken away to very sad places called concentration camps. It was a very difficult time for many families.

Hope and Freedom Return

Even though things were tough, some people in the Netherlands tried to help each other and resist the German rule. Eventually, friendly armies called the Allies started to arrive and help free the country. By May 1945, the whole Netherlands was free again! It was a happy day, but the country had been through a lot and needed time to heal.
