Key Facts
Meet the Neanderthals!
Neanderthals were a special kind of human who lived a super long time ago, from about 400,000 to 40,000 years ago. They weren't exactly like us, but they were very smart and strong! They had thick bones, a big nose that helped them breathe cold air, and a large head.
They looked a bit different from us today, but they were our ancient cousins. They lived in caves and built fires to stay warm and cook their food. It’s like they were nature’s superheroes!
Where Did They Roam?
These amazing people lived in a place called Eurasia. That’s a giant area that includes parts of Europe and Asia. Think of it as a huge playground stretching across many countries!
They were really good at living in cold places, like during ice ages when big sheets of ice covered the land. Their bodies were built for the cold, with shorter arms and legs to keep them warm. They were like the ultimate winter explorers, surviving in tough environments where other early humans might have struggled.
Neanderthal Super Skills!
Neanderthals were incredible hunters! They used strong wooden spears to hunt big animals like mammoths and woolly rhinos. Imagine hunting an animal as big as a bus!
They also knew how to make tools from stone, like sharp knives and scrapers. They were clever and used their brains to figure out how to survive. They even took care of their sick and injured family members, which shows they were kind and caring.
They buried their dead, sometimes with flowers, which is a very special thing to do.
Why We Remember Them
Even though Neanderthals aren't around anymore, they are super important to us! Scientists have found their bones and tools, which tell us a lot about how they lived. It’s like finding clues to a giant mystery!
We know that some people today have a tiny bit of Neanderthal DNA in them. This means that our ancestors met and even had families with Neanderthals a very, very long time ago. They are a big part of our human story!
