Who Was This Little Emperor?

Napoleon II was born a prince, and even a king, but he never really got to rule! His dad was the super famous Emperor Napoleon I. His mom was Empress Marie Louise, a princess from Austria. Even though he was a prince, he was called the King of Rome when he was born. That’s a fancy title! He was also called the Prince Imperial. He was born in 1811, a long, long time ago.

A Crown for a Short Time!

Napoleon II's dad, Emperor Napoleon I, had to step down from being emperor. He wanted his son to be the next emperor, but the other countries said no. So, Napoleon II was technically the Emperor of the French for only a few weeks! It was like being the captain of a game for just a moment. After his dad lost his power, Napoleon II lived in Austria with his grandpa.

Life as a Duke, Not an Emperor

Even though he was born a prince and briefly an emperor, Napoleon II lived most of his life in Austria. His grandpa, who was an emperor himself, gave him a new title: Duke of Reichstadt. This is like getting a new nickname and a special job. He was known as Franz in Austria. He was also called 'the Eaglet' because he was the son of a great leader, like a baby eagle!

A Sad Ending for the Little Emperor

Sadly, Napoleon II didn't live a very long life. He got sick with a disease called tuberculosis and passed away when he was only 21 years old. That's younger than most people finish school! Even though he never ruled France, his story is part of history. His cousin later became Emperor Napoleon III, so the Bonaparte family stayed in power for a bit longer.
