What Happened on a Tragic Day?

On a day in March 1968, soldiers went into a village called My Lai in Vietnam. They were looking for bad guys, but they found only regular people like moms, kids, and grandpas. Sadly, the soldiers made a very, very bad choice and hurt many of these innocent villagers. It was a dark moment in a big war happening far away.

Who Was Hurt and Why?

Most of the people hurt were women, children, and older men who couldn't fight. The soldiers were supposed to be protecting people, but instead, they caused a lot of sadness. Some people were gathered together and then hurt with weapons. It's hard to imagine, but this was a very sad event where many lives were lost because of wrong decisions.

A Brave Helper!

Even though many bad things happened, there was a brave pilot named Hugh Thompson Jr. He was flying in a helicopter and saw what was going on. He and his crew decided they had to help! They landed their helicopter between the soldiers and the villagers to try and stop the hurting. It shows that even in tough times, people can choose to be kind and brave.

Learning from Sadness

After this sad event, people were very upset when they found out what happened. It made many people think about the war and why it was important to be careful and fair. It's a reminder that even when things are confusing, it's always important to treat everyone with kindness and respect, especially those who are not fighting.
