Key Facts
Meet the Arctic's Woolly Wonder!
Imagine an animal with super-long, shaggy fur that looks like a giant teddy bear! That's a muskox! These amazing creatures live in the super cold Arctic, where it snows a lot.
They have big, curved horns that look like helmets and a thick coat to keep them super warm. Muskoxen are like living, breathing snow forts, perfectly built for their icy home. They are herbivores, meaning they munch on plants like grasses and flowers.
A Herd of Super Survivors!
Muskoxen love to hang out together in herds, like a big family. When danger comes, like a wolf, they form a circle with the babies in the middle. It's like a giant, furry shield wall! This helps protect them from predators. They can also run surprisingly fast when they need to, almost as fast as a galloping horse. These animals have been around for a very, very long time, surviving ice ages!
What's Inside a Muskox's Lunchbox?
Even though they live in a snowy place, muskoxen are always finding yummy green things to eat. In the summer, they gobble up grasses, flowers, and even small bushes. When winter comes, they dig through the snow with their noses to find frozen plants. Their special stomachs help them digest tough plant food. They are herbivores, which means they only eat plants, never meat!
Super Cozy and Super Strong!
A muskox's fur is its superpower! It has two layers: a long, shaggy outer coat and a super-soft, warm inner layer called 'qiviut'. This qiviut is so warm, it's like wearing a cozy blanket made of sunshine!
It helps them survive temperatures that would freeze other animals. Muskoxen are also quite big, weighing as much as a small car, and they can live for about 20 years. They are truly built for the wild Arctic!
