MS Lord Selkirk II
Key Facts
Meet the Big Boat!
The MS Lord Selkirk II was a super cool passenger ship that sailed on Lake Winnipeg in Canada. It was the last big cruise ship to ever sail on that lake! It was so big, it was the largest ship ever built between two huge areas called the Great Lakes and the Rocky Mountains.
It could hold 130 passengers, like a whole bunch of friends, and 40 crew members to help everyone. It was 176 feet long, which is longer than a big school bus!
Adventures on the Water!
This amazing ship started its journeys in 1969 and sailed for 17 whole years. Imagine all the fun trips it took! People went on multi-day adventures, exploring Lake Winnipeg.
Inside, there was a game room for playing, a dining room for yummy meals, and a lounge where musicians played music. Even very important people, like Queen Elizabeth II, sailed on this ship in 1970. That's like a real queen visiting your playground!
A Ship with Many Jobs
When the MS Lord Selkirk II was first made, it was meant to carry both people and important things like food. It had special rooms that were kept cold, like a giant refrigerator, and even rooms that were frozen! It could also carry 120 tons of fuel for its own trips.
That's a lot of weight! But later, people started driving cars and flying planes more, so the ship became more of a fun vacation boat.
The Ship's Last Voyage
Sadly, after many years of sailing, the MS Lord Selkirk II stopped its trips in 1990. It sat docked for a long time. Then, in 2012, a fire happened on the ship, and it was ruined. Only a lifeboat and an anchor were saved and put in a museum. So, even though the big ship is gone, these special pieces help us remember its exciting adventures on the water.
