Meet the Rocky Giants!

Imagine a giant's playground! That's kind of what the Mourne Mountains are like. They are a bunch of big, rocky hills in the southeast of Northern Ireland.

These mountains are made of a special kind of rock called granite, which is super strong. The highest mountain here is called Slieve Donard, and it's as tall as about 10 giraffes stacked on top of each other! It's a very special place because it's known for its beautiful scenery.

A Super Long Wall!

There's a really, really long wall that goes over fifteen of the mountain tops! It's called the Mourne Wall. It's so long it would take you a whole day to walk its entire length. This wall was built a long, long time ago to keep water safe in two special lakes called reservoirs. These lakes hold water for people to use. It's like a giant fence keeping the water clean and ready for everyone.

Fun for Everyone!

Lots of people love to visit the Mourne Mountains every year. It's a place where you can go for amazing walks and see incredible views. Because it's so beautiful, people think it should be Northern Ireland's very first national park, which is a special protected area. Some parts of the mountains are looked after by a group called the National Trust, who help keep it looking its best for visitors.
