Mountain Pigeon
Key Facts
Where Do These Feathered Friends Live?
Imagine islands far, far away, in a place called eastern Indonesia and western Melanesia. That's where the mountain pigeons call home! They love living in forests that grow on hills and mountains, way up high. It's like their own special, tall playground. These birds are about as long as a big school ruler, and they have long tails and wings that help them fly through the trees.
What Do Mountain Pigeons Look Like?
These pigeons are mostly a dull grey, white, or brown color, which helps them hide among the trees. But here's the super cool part: they have bright red skin around their eyes! It looks like they're wearing colorful glasses.
Most boy and girl mountain pigeons look the same, but in some kinds, you can see tiny differences. They are very friendly and like to hang out in big groups, sometimes with over 100 birds!
A Day in the Life of a Mountain Pigeon
Mountain pigeons are very social and love to fly in flocks, which are groups of birds. They usually fly together in groups of 10 to 40, but sometimes even more! They are usually quiet birds, but when they leave their high homes in the morning to find food, they make a special whooshing sound with their wings. They eat yummy fruits, like figs, that grow high up in the trees.
Building a Cozy Nest!
When it's time to have baby birds, mountain pigeons build nests. Some build a simple nest right on the ground, like a little cozy bed. Others build a nest made of sticks, high up in a tree, a few meters off the ground. That's like building a fort way up in the branches! Each nest usually has just one white egg. It’s a special job to take care of the egg until the baby bird hatches.
