Where Do Mountain Goats Live?

Imagine a place with super tall mountains and rocky cliffs. That's where mountain goats love to hang out! They live in the wild, rocky places of western North America.

These goats are like nature's best rock climbers, scampering up steep slopes and near-vertical cliffs. They like it way up high because it helps them stay safe from animals like bears and wolves that can't climb as well. They usually stay high up, only coming down when they really need to find food or when the weather is super bad.

Amazing Climbing Superpowers!

Mountain goats have special hooves that help them grip rocks. Their hooves have a hard outer edge and a soft, rubbery inner part, like built-in climbing shoes! This helps them stick to even the slipperiest, iciest surfaces.

They can jump surprisingly far, too, sometimes leaping across gaps that look way too big. It's like they have superpowers for climbing! They are so good at climbing that they can walk on ledges that are only a few inches wide.

That's narrower than a school bus is long!

What's a Mountain Goat Like?

These goats are not like the ones you might see on a farm. They have thick, white fur to keep them warm in the cold, snowy mountains. They look a bit like a fluffy sheep but with strong legs and sharp horns.

They are about the size of a large dog, but much stronger! Mountain goats are herbivores, which means they only eat plants. They munch on grasses, leaves, and twigs they find on the mountainsides.

They are truly masters of their high-altitude home.

Not Your Average Goat!

Did you know that mountain goats aren't actually true goats? They are more like goat-antelopes! They are related to animals like chamois and serows, which also live in rocky places.

They have a scientific name, Oreamnos americanus. They are built for life in the mountains, with amazing balance and strength. Their ability to survive in such tough, high places makes them one of the most incredible climbers in the animal kingdom.

They are truly wild wonders!
