Meet Africa's Awesome Mountain!

Imagine a super-tall mountain that's like a giant sleeping volcano! That's Mount Kenya. It's the second-tallest mountain in all of Africa, which is super high!

Its tallest peaks are called Batian, Nelion, and Point Lenana. This amazing mountain is so big it's where five different counties in Kenya meet. It's also not too far from the equator, the imaginary line that goes around the middle of the Earth.

Mount Kenya is so important that the whole country, Kenya, is named after it!

A Mountain Born from Fire!

Mount Kenya wasn't always here. It was born about 3 million years ago from a big volcano eruption! Long, long ago, it was even taller, maybe as tall as 7,000 meters!

That's way taller than any building you've ever seen. For thousands of years, it was covered in a giant ice cap, like a frosty hat. This ice carved out valleys and made the mountain's slopes look all bumpy and interesting.

Today, there are still 11 small glaciers, but they are melting fast!

Home to Special Plants and Animals!

The sides of Mount Kenya are like a magical staircase with different kinds of homes for plants and animals. Lower down, there are thick forests. As you go higher, you find special plants that only grow on Mount Kenya, like giant, fuzzy lobelias and senecios.

These plants look like they're from another planet! There's also a special kind of rock hyrax, which is a small furry animal, that lives here and nowhere else. It's like a secret club for these unique creatures!

A Park for Everyone to Enjoy!

Because Mount Kenya is so special, a big part of it was made into a National Park in 1949. It's like a giant nature playground! This park is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which means it's recognized as being super important for the whole world.

Lots of people, over 16,000 every year, visit this amazing place to see its beauty. The mountain is also a super important source of water for many people living in Kenya, making it vital for life.
