Meet the Jagged Giant!

Imagine a giant pointy hat made of rock and ice! That's Mount Huntington in Alaska. It's not as tall as its super famous neighbor, Denali, but it's way steeper. Think of a super-duper steep slide at the playground, but a million times bigger! This mountain has faces that drop down for more than 5,000 feet, which is taller than about 500 school buses stacked up! It's a very tricky place to climb.

When Did Explorers Visit?

Long ago, brave explorers wanted to be the first to stand on top of Mount Huntington. In 1964, a team from France, led by a famous climber named Lionel Terray, made it all the way to the top! They climbed up a special path that is now called the French Ridge. The very next year, another group of climbers found a different way up the mountain. It shows how exciting it is to explore new places!

What's It Like Up There?

Mount Huntington is covered in ice and snow, making it look like a sparkly diamond. It's located in a big, wild place called the Alaska Range. To get to the mountain, climbers have to travel on big rivers of ice called glaciers. There are two main glaciers nearby: the West Fork of the Ruth Glacier and the Tokositna Glacier. These glaciers are like icy highways to the base of the mountain.

Why Climbers Love It!

Even though Mount Huntington is not the tallest mountain, it's super famous among climbers who love a challenge. The paths up this mountain are very difficult and require special skills and equipment. It's like a super hard video game level that only the best players can beat! Because it's so steep and tricky, it's a favorite spot for climbers who want to test their bravery and climbing skills.
