Key Facts
Where is This Giant Mountain?
Imagine a super-duper tall mountain standing proud in California! That's Mount Humphreys! It's part of a huge mountain range called the Sierra Nevada, which means 'snowy mountains' in Spanish. This mountain is so big it sits right on the border between two places called Fresno and Inyo counties. It's like a giant marker in the sky!
How Tall is This Mountain?
Mount Humphreys is really, really tall! It's the 13th highest mountain in all of California. That's super impressive! While it's not one of the absolute tallest mountains (those are called 'fourteeners' because they are over 14,000 feet high), it's still the highest mountain you can see around the town of Bishop. It’s like the king of its neighborhood!
Who Named This Big Mountain?
A long, long time ago, in 1873, some smart people called the California Geological Survey were exploring. They decided to give this amazing mountain a name. They named it after a very important man named Andrew A. Humphreys. He was in charge of all the engineers in the U.S. Army back then. So, the mountain got its name from a leader!
What's it Like Up There?
Since Mount Humphreys is so high, it's often covered in snow, especially at the very top. The air is very thin and cold, so it's not like a place you'd build a house. It's a wild, natural place where only the toughest plants and animals can live. It's a beautiful, rocky giant that watches over the land below.
